Storyteller June Peters from
London, came to South America in September 2004 for a six week tour, visiting
Uruguay, Argentina, Peru and Chile. June is a versatile storyteller with a very interactive style, able to select magical stories to suit each audience. In her sessions she dipped into a repertoire of stories, songs, riddles, rhymes and games, together with fiddle and mbira music. In her own words, "The sort of stories I tell range from finger rhymes and stories with a high degree of participation, to epics, myths and wondertales. They come from many cultural backgrounds - however my favourites and my strengths are Celtic, Russian, African, Indian and Arabic and also some Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Sumerian myths." June also gave her speciality, “The Storytelling Fair”, in Instituto Crandon, Montevideo, Uruguay. The Story Fair involves older children hearing, learning, rehearsing and retelling stories to younger children. Sixth Grade students learnt the ancient art of storytelling through games, listening and retelling. Then they divided into small groups and set up comfortable nooks made with attractive materials, so that each group of storytellers had a private area for entertaining its audiences. They retold their stories to First Grade students, reinforcing what they’d learnt, and imparting an enthusiasm for language learning to the younger children.
